In a bid to enhance media coordination and preserve regional cohesion, Oman has put forward a proposal for unified guidelines to manage social media content across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This initiative was unveiled during the 29th meeting of GCC Information Ministers, which took place in Manama, Bahrain, with Oman’s Minister of Information, Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi, leading the delegation.
The proposal aims to establish a collaborative framework among GCC nations to improve the monitoring and documentation of harmful and misleading content on both traditional and digital media platforms. By promoting accountability and supporting legal actions aligned with national legislation, the initiative seeks to address the spread of offensive material that could potentially disrupt regional harmony.
During the meeting, the GCC Information Ministers reiterated their commitment to safeguarding regional security and stability through strengthened cooperation. They underscored the importance of media organizations, journalists, and social media users verifying information and refraining from disseminating misleading content that might strain relations among the Gulf countries.
The discussions also delved into the necessity of bolstering cooperation among Gulf media institutions amidst the rapid advancements in digital media and artificial intelligence. The ministers emphasized the crucial role of official media in promoting public awareness, delivering accurate information, and showcasing the developmental achievements of the region.
The collective efforts of the GCC countries in addressing emerging digital challenges were highlighted as vital to protecting shared interests and reinforcing ties among the member states’ populations. The meeting served as a platform to advocate for coordinated media strategies to navigate the evolving digital landscape effectively.
