While a great carrier is essential, a pet’s comfort also depends on the environment around the carrier. Creating a calm atmosphere can dramatically reduce their stress levels and make the journey more pleasant for everyone.
It starts with your own energy. Pets are incredibly intuitive and can sense your stress. If you are frantic, rushed, or anxious, they will be too. Prepare everything well in advance so that on travel day, you can be calm and reassuring. Speak to them in a soft, soothing voice. Your relaxed demeanour is one of the most powerful calming tools you have.
Manage their sensory input. Travel can be an onslaught of loud noises and strange smells. In a car, play soft, classical music or a pet-calming playlist instead of loud radio. Keep the volume low. Avoid using strong air fresheners. On a plane or train, a lightweight blanket draped over part of the carrier can help muffle sound and reduce visual overstimulation, creating a more den-like atmosphere.
Maintain a comfortable temperature. Whether in a car or waiting at an airport, be mindful of their temperature. Keep the carrier out of direct sunlight. Ensure there is good airflow, but avoid placing them directly in front of an air-conditioning vent. This attention to their sensory and physical environment goes beyond the carrier to create a truly comfortable travel bubble.
