Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming that the Gulf nation is hindering investigations into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots during a recent conflict. Tehran insists that these pilots went missing and has alleged that Doha is obstructing efforts to uncover their whereabouts. In response, Qatar has firmly denied these allegations, dismissing any claims of detaining the pilots.
According to Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official from the Iranian armed forces, an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been awaiting clearance to travel to Qatar for months to probe the situation. Bagherzadeh has appealed to Doha to grant access to the investigative team and has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene in the matter. Iran has also reported that it has already retrieved the body of one pilot, Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed in an incident involving the US Al Udeid Air Base situated in Qatar.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, has strongly refuted the allegations, stating that the Iranian pilots were never detained. Al-Ansari explained that Qatar had attempted to contact the pilots after they allegedly breached Qatari airspace, resorting to defensive measures only when communication attempts failed. Following the incident, Qatar stated that its search and rescue teams had undertaken efforts to locate both the pilots and any remains. Additionally, Doha highlighted that it had cooperated with Iran to facilitate the transfer of the recovered remains of one of the pilots.
Qatar asserts that it extended an invitation to Iranian officials in April, urging them to dispatch a team to gain insights into the search and rescue operations. However, according to Doha, there was no response from the Iranian authorities to this invitation. This diplomatic friction occurs amidst ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other nations triggered by the conflict that erupted earlier this year. In this context, Qatar has been recognized for its diplomatic endeavors aimed at easing tensions and fostering dialogue among the conflicting parties.
