WhatsApp is introducing a significant update to enhance user privacy by allowing connections through usernames instead of phone numbers. This marks a transformative change in the platform’s communication approach. The rollout of this feature is happening gradually, with users currently able to reserve unique usernames in preparation for a global launch anticipated later this year. Once the feature is fully deployed, users will have the option to initiate chats with a username, keeping their mobile numbers private.
The new system enables users to establish a distinctive handle within the app. To send a message, one would only need to know the recipient’s username, eliminating the need for phone numbers. If a chosen username is already in use, WhatsApp offers alternative suggestions via an internal generator. A notable aspect of this privacy enhancement is the absence of a public username directory, ensuring that only individuals already familiar with a specific username can make contact.
To reserve a username, WhatsApp users should update their app and navigate to Settings → Account → Username. The platform will alert users when this feature becomes available in their respective regions. Given WhatsApp’s extensive user base, with billions of users worldwide, early reservations are being encouraged to secure preferred usernames amidst likely competition.
In addition to usernames, an optional “username key” will be available, providing an extra layer of security. This key can be shared separately, offering users more control over who can initiate conversations with them. This feature is not limited to personal users but is also designed to benefit creators, businesses, and public accounts, enabling them to align their WhatsApp identity with handles on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
It’s important to note that adopting a username is not mandatory. Users who prefer the traditional method of using phone numbers can continue to do so. As the feature becomes accessible in different regions, users will receive notifications within the app.
