Mark Rydell, a renowned Oscar-nominated director, has passed away at the age of 97 due to natural causes. He spent his final days at a retirement community specifically for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s most celebrated work was the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” which brought together a stellar cast including Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a significant success, receiving 10 Oscar nominations, and both Henry Fonda and Hepburn won awards for their performances. Rydell himself was nominated for Best Director, although the award ultimately went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.”

“On Golden Pond” was not only a critical success but also a commercial hit, amassing over $119 million globally at the box office. This film marked Henry Fonda’s final role, for which he earned his only Academy Award. Throughout his illustrious career, Rydell worked with a host of Hollywood icons such as Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson.
