Pakistan Sees Hopeful Signs in Mediating Iran-US Tensions Amid Regional Efforts

by admin477351

Pakistan’s military is cautiously optimistic about its role in mediating efforts between Iran and the United States, amid ongoing regional tensions. Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, a military spokesperson, highlighted the diplomatic initiatives aimed at preventing further escalation in the Middle East. Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s multiple visits to Tehran this month, including one on Monday with senior officials from Saudi Arabia and Turkey, suggest some positive developments, according to Chaudhry.

During these visits, Munir was accompanied by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, reflecting a regional push to address the conflict between Iran and the US. Although Chaudhry emphasized a cautiously optimistic outlook, he warned that opponents of a diplomatic resolution could still hinder progress. Details of the discussions remain undisclosed, and it is unclear whether Washington has endorsed the latest diplomatic missions.

The discussions also spotlighted the defense agreement signed on August 7 by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. This agreement stipulates that an attack on any signatory is considered an attack on all, reinforcing their collective security commitment. Chaudhry noted that the agreement allows for other countries to join, provided they share the goals of regional peace and deterrence, though any decision would rest with the political leaders of the three founding nations.

When questioned about the potential deployment of additional Pakistani troops to Saudi Arabia, Chaudhry indicated that such a move would depend on the regional security situation and consultations between the respective governments. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending Saudi Arabia and protecting the holy cities of Makkah and Medina, while clarifying that Pakistan is not involved in the Yemen conflict.

Pakistan’s diplomatic endeavors come amid rising concerns over the potential widening of the Iran-US confrontation, which could destabilize the region and affect security across the Middle East. Cooperation among regional powers is increasingly viewed as essential to preventing further escalation and maintaining stability.
