For the sixth night in a row, Kyiv has been targeted by Russian drone and missile strikes, resulting in at least 12 deaths in and around the Ukrainian capital as Moscow ramps up its offensive on vital infrastructure. Among those killed, eight were in Kyiv, including six railway workers at a depot, while an additional four fatalities occurred in the Boryspil area nearby. The assault also left several individuals wounded, including children, amid the barrage of drones and ballistic missiles aimed at Kyiv and Odesa.
Ukrainian authorities reported that, despite the interception of many incoming weapons by air defenses, several managed to hit their targets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted that Russia is exploiting the shortage of US-made Patriot air-defense interceptors, crucial for defending against such high-speed threats. “Russia always plans its strikes specifically to cause as much destruction to people’s lives as possible,” Zelenskyy remarked, emphasizing the increased efficacy of these attacks when Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities are insufficient.
The railway network in Ukraine has been significantly impacted by these ongoing attacks, with the deaths of six railway employees underscoring the toll on essential transportation infrastructure. The strikes have led to damage and disruptions, adding strain to a critical system for both civilian movement and wartime logistics. Moreover, Russia has stepped up its deployment of jet-powered drones, which pose a greater challenge to intercept, forcing Kyiv residents to endure prolonged shelter stays and further unsettling daily life. In response, Ukraine has targeted Russian military and energy assets, such as oil facilities and warehouses, to exert both economic and military pressure on Moscow.
The surge in hostilities comes amid a standoff on the battlefield, where little headway has been made toward a diplomatic resolution. Ukrainian leaders are calling on Western nations for enhanced air-defense support, particularly as winter approaches. International efforts to mediate the conflict remain sparse, though Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider peace over continued warfare.
