On the sidelines of the eighth Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit in Moscow, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani convened to discuss enhancing political, economic, and energy ties between their nations. This meeting, involving key figures from major natural gas-producing countries such as Iran, Russia, Qatar, and Algeria, highlighted a mutual interest in deepening bilateral relations and fostering cooperation in the energy sector.

The leaders underscored the necessity of improving coordination among gas-exporting countries to bolster their collective interests. The discussions come amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, sparked by US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which led to retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Iran across the region, including against Qatar.

Qatar has played a pivotal role in diplomatic efforts aimed at mitigating regional tensions and facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. The discussion between Pezeshkian and Sheikh Tamim is part of broader diplomatic engagements intended to stabilize the region and promote cooperative initiatives.

Following the meeting with the Qatari emir, President Pezeshkian was scheduled to engage in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These discussions were expected to focus on regional developments and the potential for increased cooperation between Tehran and Moscow. Russia has signaled its readiness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the Middle East conflict.
